Review

An excellent alternative in the San Pedro area for those who don’t have the budget for the 5-star big hitters such as Tierra, Alto, Cumbres et al. Casa Atacama knows it cannot match their grandeur, so instead focuses – successfully – on providing comfortable, private accommodation in a relaxing and peaceful environment. With the residents-only pool, spa, dining and excursions, we believe Casa Atacama offers very good value for money for those wanting to experience the magic of the Atacama Desert.

Location

Casa Atacama is just a 5-10 minutes walk from the central plaza of San Pedro, yet is far enough from the town to avoid any noise from the crowds and traffic.

Rooms

The 45 rooms are split evenly – 22 Deluxe room, 22 Suites, plus 1 King Suite. In truth, there is little between the deluxe rooms and suites in terms of the bedroom itself. However, there is one key difference that sets them apart: the outdoor terrace. Deluxe room terraces are walled-in, so this greatly limits the direct sunshine and feels a little cramped due to the lack of view. For this reason, we strongly recommend the suites, as their terraces overlook the pool area.

The King suite has a private jacuzzi and is the only room with a TV. Whilst rooms do not have air-con, they do have a fan; as well as heating. There are 3 sets of interconnecting rooms. It is also worth noting that several the rooms have almost open-plan bedroom/bathrooms. Whilst this may not me an issue for couples, we recommend requesting a “closed bathroom” if a bit more privacy is required.

Layout

Entrance into the reception is at street level, but from thereon the rest of the property slopes away from the road in keeping with the natural topography of the plot. With a high boundary wall, this actually adds to the serene seclusion of Casa Atacama. Just don’t expect mountain-view sunsets. Below the lobby and lounge is the dining area, where guests take breakfast, lunch and dinner. The rooms are divided in four separate blocks. In the epicentre of the complex is the pool and spa; which have bar access.

Facilities

Casa Atacama run numerous excursions. These are included for Full-board patrons (along with all meals and select drinks); or can be booked ad hoc and paid for by those staying on a B&B or half-board basis. The reception is open 24/7 and has a free filtered-water station for all guests. The spa includes wet & dry steam rooms, a jacuzzi and the pool. Treatments can be booked, but the masseur is not in-house, so these must be booked in advance. The hotel provides a supplementary laundry service and has Wi-Fi throughout, although this can be weak in the bedrooms.
