Located in the southern corner of Copacabana beach on the boundary with Ipanema, this hotel has beautiful views out to Sugarloaf in one corner and Copacabana Fort in the other. The hotel’s section of the beach is in a sheltered corner next to the Fort, a popular spot for paddle boats and swimmers.
Entering the Sofitel you are met by a large lobby area with lifts leading off to the guest rooms and corridors leading off to the large pool and restaurant area. Poolside rooms are located on the southern side of the hotel, while the suites are located on the higher floors for the best views.
With 388 rooms and suites, this is one of Copacabana’s largest hotels. Rooms are classically decorated with neutral colours and wood panelling. While rooms have more of a business feel here, they do have the added benefit of a small balcony. You can choose from a city, pool or sea view room, but we would strongly recommend going for a sea view room to make the most of the hotel’s location.
Although we feel that this hotel is slightly lacking in character, there are some key features, which we really like. For example, the hotel’s beach area, providing loungers, water and fruit for paying guests, is in a quieter and more sheltered spot on Copacabana. It also has the benefit of two pools, a ‘morning sun’ pool and an ‘afternoon sun’ pool, for catching the last rays of the day. Furthermore, it has two restaurants, one, Le Pre Catelan, having been awarded a Michelin Star and the Restaurant Atlanis which has a beautiful sweeping terrace overlooking the beach.
