Review

Built in the 1950s Hotel Antumalal was one of the first hotels to be established in Chile’s Northern Lake District. Having hosted a number of famous of names and faces over the years, including the Queen and Neil Armstrong, its appeal lies in its sense of history and strong ties to the local area. Those with an interest in architecture will also love the modernist design which slots into the landscape and panoramic windows overlooking Lake Villarrica.

Location

Perched on a cliff top in 5 hectares of private gardens, Antumalal is set in an extremely peaceful location overlooking Lake Villarrica. The hotel is around a 5-minute drive from the town of Pucón in Chile’s Northern Lake District, which is a hub for adventure activities like hiking, rafting, mountain biking and fly-fishing and also boasts a number of good restaurants.

Rooms

There are 16 rooms in the main hotel building with three private chalets and a lake house which are ideal for families or groups of friends, sleeping four, five and six people with their own kitchen and dining area. All rooms have panoramic windows looking out over the lake and a small fireplace. Those wanting more space to stretch out in can book a suite with a separate living area.

Layout

The main building houses the hotel’s lake-view restaurant, cosy bar area and living room with sofas and a fireplace. A corridor then leads off to the rooms, which are lined up on the ground and first floor of the main building. On the lower ground level there is the hotel’s Spa Antumaco with an indoor and outdoor pool and sauna.

Features

In addition to the spa, indoor/ outdoor pool and restaurant, guests can spend time taking walks through the hotels gardens and relaxing down by the lake on the pebble beach. There are also 3 piers and in high season a boat which takes guests across the lake to Pucón. The hotel’s restaurant serves fresh local food, with vegetables from the hotel’s own organic garden and, further evidence that Antumalal was ahead of its time; it harnesses hydroelectric energy from a waterfall within its grounds to produce power for the hotel.

Another key attraction of staying at Antumalal is the flexibility they offer; guests can bring their own vehicle and stay on a B&B or half-board basis or sign up for an all-inclusive activity programme. This provides the option of choosing from a range of guided activities in the local area; from trekking, to horse riding, volcano hikes and visits to hot springs.

Peaceful location, flexibility and modernist design.

Be prepared for heavy traffic around Pucón if you visit in January and February.
