Review

Set within a lush biological reserve in Chile’s Lake District and surrounded by peaceful lakes, snow-topped volcanoes and the Andes mountain range, Huilo Huilo is made up of a number of lodges and hotels, which offer immediate access to stunning nature. The Nothofaghus, Montaña Mágica and Reino Funghi Lodges are a great option for families with their quirky tree-house style design and relaxed restaurant and common areas, whereas Nawelpi is an exclusive riverside lodge with private guides for those seeking to immerse themselves in the peace and quiet of the surrounding wilderness.

Located in the midst of the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve which covers an enormous area of over 245 000 acres, Huilo Huilo is a two and a half-hour drive from Temuco and is best reached with your own vehicle. The hotel is also only a 5-minute drive from Puerto Fuy, where you can take a daily ferry across the serene Lago Pirihueco to Argentina and drive on to San Martín de los Andes.

The three hotels Nothofaghus, Montaña Mágica and Reino Funghi that look like giant tree houses, share the same facilities with a restaurant, two swimming pools and a spa for guests to use. The most exclusive of the hotels is Nawelpi Lodge, which is tucked away on the banks of the River Fuy and has its own restaurant and chef, vehicles and private guides.

In keeping with the natural, wooden design of the buildings, the rooms are cosy and simply decorated with big windows to make the most of the views of the surrounding forest. At Nawelpi the rooms face the river and have their own private terraces with a wood-fired hot tub.

Although we’d recommend taking your own vehicle to Huilo Huilo to make the most of the enormous reserve and surroundings, there are a wide range of excursions available including horse riding, trekking, mountain biking, canopy zip lines and cultural activities. There’s even a brewery selling artisan beer from the region and a cable car to make the most of the beautiful views.

One of the most impressive features at Huilo Huilo is their commitment to conservation and protecting the biological diversity of the temperate Patagonian rainforest. Each evening guests are left information on the Foundation’s work, including their work to preserve the habitats of the endangered Huemul, Darwin frog and the Puma.
